Argo Tea's Bubble Teas

Living in New York City, there is no shortage of bubble tea, or boba, as some call it. Therefore, I was pleasantly surprised when I also found out that I could get bubble tea at Argo Tea—my most frequented tea shop (it’s in my favorite study spot). Argo Tea has three bubble teas on the menu, but before I get into those, I want to talk about their bubbles.

Argo Tea’s bubbles are not typical tapioca balls. They are made of nata de coco, which is basically coconut gel. This makes the “pearls,” as Argo Tea calls them, vegan and gluten-free. Actually, boba made from tapioca is also vegan and gluten-free, so I’m not sure why Argo Tea doesn’t just use it. However, many people don’t like the taste and/or texture of boba, and the nata de coco is very different. The pearls are square and still a fun texture—juice squeezes out when you bit into it. In my opinion, they don’t have a distinct flavor but instead take on the flavor of the drink. Speaking of…

Black Tea Coconut

Argo Tea’s black tea coconut bubble tea has a strong coconut flavor that overpowers the flavor of the black tea. Additionally, I ordered this iced tea with almond milk (as I always do), which made this drink very nutty-tasting. If I were to order it again, which I will, I would try it with coconut milk because I think it would compliment the flavor better. Thankfully Argo Tea doesn’t charge extra for milk alternatives. The bubbles in this drink taste like chocolate to me. I’m not really sure why considering I don’t think there is chocolate in the drink. Whatever the reason, they taste delicious and add a fun twist to this drink.

Green Tea Raspberry

I say in nearly every blog post that I am not a big fan of green tea. However, I do generally like green tea mixed with fruit flavors, and Argo Tea’s green tea raspberry bubble tea is no exception. Maybe it’s because the raspberry is very strong, but I actually love the combination of the flavors in this iced tea. Even the bubbles taste like raspberry in this drink, which (unlike the black tea coconut) makes sense.

White Tea Mango

The White Tea Mango is a new addition to Argo Tea’s menu that I discovered when I returned to school this past fall. White tea is one of my favorite teas, and mango is one of my favorite flavors, so this iced tea is like a match made in heaven. Just like the other drinks, the mango flavor is the strongest in the white tea mango bubble tea. As expected, the bubbles in this drink taste like mango.

While Argo Tea might not be the first place you think of for bubble te, they do have some pretty good options. In addition to these three flavors, you can also choose any combination of tea and flavoring to add their bubbles to and make a delicious iced drink. Plus, the nata de coco pearls they use are perfect for anyone who doesn’t like the taste or texture of traditional boba made from tapioca.
